The UnderWorld Treasure Hunt
The Vikings were a rich bunch, chieftains and adventurers who plundered their way across Europe before bringing their fortunes with them to Iceland. Many stories tell of their treasures of silver and gold which they usually hid underground before they died, leaving no witnesses, so most of these treasures have never been found. Today it is our turn to try our luck! We drive to the Thingvellir area, located at the junction of the two tectonic plates that are pulling Iceland apart. The area is filled with lava caves and tunnels and after we put on helmets and headlamps we descend into the unknown.
An expert cave guide accompanies the group explaining all about how the lava caves and it’s strange heat formations and drooping ceiling came to be. Eerie lights flicker as we walk through the cave and the young at heart gather gold coins that are scattered around the cave. Perhaps one of the hidden people who live in the Icelandic rocks and hills will greet us with the gift of a wishing stone, a rare treasure in the folktales of old…no one can say what’s around the corner in the underground world of the lava field.
