The Power Circle
Iceland´s famous route by Super Jeep to Geyser and Gullfoss waterfall
We depart from Reykjavik in a comfortable super jeep with our first stop at Thingvellir National Park, home of Iceland´s ancient parliament. After a 15 to 20 minute walk through the park where we will experience first hand the dramatic mid-Atlantic ridge, we head eastward on the mountain road Lyngdalsheiði with great views of the rugged lava fields on the hills above Laugarvatn.
As we approach Haukadalur, home of the great Geyser, chances are good you will see the reliable Strokkur geyser erupt in 5 to 7 minute intervals. This geyser spouts boiling water to as height of approximately 25 to 30 meters. We will stop at the Geysir site with plenty of time to explore the hot springs and view several eruptions of Strokkur. We then head up the road to the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall cascading down the two teired drop of the white colored Hvita river, with its powerful glacial run-off waters.
After time for lunch on your own at the Gullfoss dining hall, we will drive north onto the beginning of the Kjölur interior mountain road. Here we approach Icelands second largest glacier Langjökull. Depending on the weather and time of year, optional activities can be pursued in this region.
Later in the afternoon we head south through the agricultural headland of southwest Iceland along river valleys and through small settlements. We will stop at the explosion crater at Kerið for a visit to this geological wonder. If time allows we will stop in the hot springs town of Hveragerði before ascending to the Hellisheiði plateau on our way back to Reykjavík.
