Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Glacier
See the world famous gateway to the center of the earth.
We get off to an early morning start on our adventure to the north of Reykjavík. We travel through the main town of west Iceland at Borgarnes and then head west onto the beautiful multi-colored terrain of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
The western tip is the newly designated national park including the glacier and stunning coastal beaches and cliffs. We will visit a view point in the foothills of the glacier, made famous in the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth penned by French novelist, Jules Verne. We will head down to the beach at Djúpalónssandur where you can try lifting one of the large stones or collect a few of the naturally polished lava stones at the surf s edge.
We will stop at the charming settlement of Hellnar nestled below the glacier at the oceans edge and view spectacular cliffs teaming with birds for a god part of the year. Then we will head north around the peninsula to the weather-exposed fishing village of Ólafsvík . During the day we will stop for lunch either at Búðir or Ólafsvík (not included in the tour cost).
We then head back to the main road to Reykjavík and arrive back at our starting point in the early evening following a rewarding experience on Iceland’s mystical Snæfellsnes.
